Sources say Apple was coerced into iTunes LP.

imageApple was apparently muscled into promoting the purchase of entire albums through the iTunes Store by members of the Recording Industry Association of America.

As part of the agreement which lifted digital rights management from iTunes in April 2009 and subsequently introduced a varied price structure for songs, Apple was obligated to support the iTunes LP format.

Leaders in the recording industry who’ve seen their businesses take a huge hit due to Apple’s pay-for-the-songs-you-want model hope to reinvigorate the market for complete albums with this move.

ipodnn reports that Apple was not especially interested in iTunes LP idea and that the project has achieved “mixed results,” with only around 29 titles to date.
