Apple CEO expounds on relationship with Adobe.

image“Apple has a long relationship with Adobe. In fact, we met Adobe’s founders when they were in their proverbial garage. Apple was their first big customer, adopting their Postscript language for our new Laserwriter printer. Apple invested in Adobe and owned around 20% of the company for many years.

The two companies worked closely together to pioneer desktop publishing and there were many good times. Since that golden era, the companies have grown apart. Apple went through its near death experience, and Adobe was drawn to the corporate market with their Acrobat products. Today the two companies still work together to serve their joint creative customers – Mac users buy around half of Adobe’s Creative Suite products – but beyond that there are few joint interests.

HP to acquire Palm for $1.2 billion.

imageHP today announced that it will acquire Palm for about $1.2 billion, or $5.70 per share of common stock.

This will allow computer maker HP to enter the fast-growing smartphone market.

The combination of HP’s global scale and financial strength with Palm’s unparalleled webOS platform will enhance HP’s ability to participate more aggressively in the fast-growing, highly profitable smartphone and connected mobile device markets. Palm’s unique webOS will allow HP to take advantage of features such as true multitasking and always up-to-date information sharing across applications.

Palm has been experiencing tumultuous times as the iPhone and the BlackBerry dominate the smartphone market.

Apple purchases Siri, Inc.

Apple has acquired Siri Inc. just months after the company was founded.

Siri developed a free voice-activated personal assistant application for the iPhone OS that utilizes voice-recognition technology from Nuance Communications and third-party services such as OpenTable and Google Maps for such tasks as restaurant reservations.

“The offer from Apple was of a scope and tenor that it was a no-brainer to accept it,” said Shawn Carolan, a managing director at Menlo Ventures and a board member at Siri since it raised a Series A round of venture capital in 2008, the Wall Street Journal reports.

San Francisco WWDC to be held June 7-11.

imageApple’s World Wide Developer Conference will take place at the Moscone West exhibition hall in San Francisco from Monday, June 7th through Friday, June 11th.

Sessions at the conference will focus on Core OS, Application Frameworks, Developer Tools, Internet & Web, and Graphics & Media.

Winners of the five iPad and iPhone Apple Design awards will also be announced at the conference, based on technology adoption and performance, technical excellence, innovation, quality, and design.

South Korea allows Apple tablet imports.

imageThe South Korean government’s communications regulator has decided to overturn a decision to ban the Apple iPad from the country.

The Wall Street Journal reports the announcement Tuesday, April 27th that Apple’s magical and revolutionary tablet computer will be allowed in the country for use by individuals and companies.

The country’s customs regulations still apply and shipments of more than five iPads at time are being held.

Apple acquires chip design firm Intrinsity.

imageApple has acquired chip design firm Intrinsity, The New York Times reports. Rumors of the acquisition surfaced late last month.

The Austin, Texas company, known for creating a fast chip for mobile devices in cooperation with Samsung, is an important player in the ARM-based chips for mobile devices.

According to the article, people familiar with the chip industry believe that Apple relied on Intrinsity’s chip as the basis for the main engine behind its new iPad.
