Apple updates AirPort and Time Capsule firmware.

imageApple today released firmware updates for its AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule wireless base stations.

Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme Base Station Firmware Update 7.5.1 provides several fixes for the latest Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme Base Station (Late 2009) including an issue with wireless performance in the 5GHz band and with creating a Guest Network in the 5GHz band.

KPCB doubles iFund to $200 million.

imageVenture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB) today announced it is doubling its iFund supporting iPhone OS projects to $200 million.

The iFund, launched in March 2008 as a $100 million investment pool, is now fully committed across 14 companies. iFund companies have been supported by an additional $330 million from follow-on investors.

Apple surpasses Wal-Mart in market capitalization once again.

imageAs of Tuesday, March 30th 2010, Apple’s market capitalization (share price times shares outstanding), bolstered by iPad shipments and a 1.5% rise in stock price, reached a whopping $213.9 billion.

This means Apple, Inc. (AAPL) is now the third largest company in the United States, behind Exxon Mobil and Microsoft.

CNN Money reports that information about Apple building an iPhone for the Verizon Wireless network helped propel shares of Apple stock to record prices.

Munster: 70% chance Apple will have search engine by 2015.

image“We believe the company needs to develop its own search technology to protect the data generated on the iPhone,” says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, referring to iPad-maker Apple, Inc.

“We believe Apple could utilize data unavailable from Google, data generated by the company’s App Store, to create a mobile centric search engine.”

The Wall Street Journal reports that Munster believes there is a 70% chance that Apple will produce a search engine within five years.

MapQuest introduces voice guidance on free navigation app.

imageMapQuest released a major update to its free MapQuest 4 Mobile GPS navigation application for the iPhone, introducing basic voice guidance and off route guidance.

The announcement reads: We’re pleased to announce that basic Voice Guidance is now available on our MapQuest 4 Mobile iPhone app. This is an exciting feature that really differentiates us from most other free navigation apps available for iPhone.

The update also adds the ability to double tap to zoom out on maps and a new energy saving option to dim the screen during voice guidance.

iPad to launch in Canada on April 24th?

imageWhen Apple officially introduced the iPad in January, the company specified the tablet will become available internationally in late April.

iPadinCanada.ca claims to have received information that the weekend of April 24th has been marked as a ‘black out period’ for Apple retail store staff in Canada, meaning they are not able to request the day off on that weekend.

This information suggests Apple plans to release the iPad on April 24th in Canada. Similar dates can be expected for the device’s launch in other markets.

Apple releases iTunes 9.1 for iPad support.

imageApple today released iTunes 9.1, bringing several improvements such as support for iPad syncing for media including eBooks.

iTunes 9.1 comes with several new features and improvements, including:

- Sync with iPad to enjoy your favorite music, movies, TV shows, books and more on the go

- Organize and sync books you’ve downloaded from iBooks on iPad or added to your iTunes library

- Rename, rearrange, or remove Genius Mixes

The update is available via Software Update and on the iTunes download site.

The iBookstore will launch around the same time as the iPad release in the United States this Saturday
