We’ve heard rumblings that Apple may be interested in buying facebook. After a recent dinner meeting at his home with facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs may have had more to discuss than partnering with facebook to expand Ping, iTunes’ new social network. Ping is one example of a social media effort made by Apple recently, but FaceTime is another. Apple is currently using people’s email addresses to initiate FaceTime calls on iPod touch units.
The move would make sense as Apple would have a network of more than 500 million users, which is about one person for every fourteen in the world. During yesterday’s conference call, Jobs was asked: “What is your aspiration for that [$50 billion] cash and why not return some to shareholders?” His response was: “Of course that’s been proposed to us. We firmly believe that one or more unique strategic opportunities will present itself to us, and we’ll be in a position to take advantage of it. We’ve been very disciplined, and will continue to be so.”
