“Panasonic used the broiling, hectic setting of the U.S. Open tennis tourney in New York Wednesday to showcase the capabilities of its first handheld consumer-grade 3D camcorder,” reports PCWorld.
“On a day so hot and humid that one athlete, Victoria Azarenka, collapsed and had to withdraw from competition, Panasonic showed how the $1,400 Panasonic HDC-SDT750 handheld unit could record clear 3D video without the large and heavy hardware usually connected with 3D videography.”

Today, Microsoft released the Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.6 Update which applies to:
-Office 2008
-Office 2008 Home and Student Edition
-Office 2008 Special Media Edition
-Word 2008
-Excel 2008
-PowerPoint 2008
-Entourage 2008
-Office 2008 for Mac Business Edition
The update includes improvements to compatibility and stability.

Microsoft will be offering two versions of Office for Mac 2011; Office for Mac Home and Student 2011 and Office for Mac Home and Business 2011.
Both versions will go on sale in late October. The student edition will cost $119 for one install and $149 for three installs. The business edition will cost $199 for one install and $279 for two installs.
Customers who purchase Office 2008 between now and November, 30, 2010 will be able to upgrade to Office 2011 for free.

Tuesday, Apple introduced its 27” widescreen LED backlit Cinema Display monitor.
The $999 monitor features a 2560x1440-pixel, 16:9 arsenic-free glass display with IPS technology that provides a 178-degree viewing angle and will ship in September.
Apple reports:
“With 60 percent more pixels than the 24-inch LED Cinema Display, the 27-inch LED Cinema Display gives you even more room for all your windows and applications.
“...You can connect your LED Cinema Display to any of the current lineup of Mac notebooks and desktop computers: MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Pro.”

Tuesday, Apple released the Magic Trackpad, an “advanced touch-friendly and wear-resistant glass surface,” or multi-touch input for the Mac desktop.
Apple reports:
“Desktop users, your time has come. The new Magic Trackpad is the first Multi-Touch trackpad designed to work with your Mac desktop computer.
It uses the same Multi-Touch technology you love on the MacBook Pro. And it supports a full set of gestures, giving you a whole new way to control and interact with what’s on your screen.”

At the Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show in January, Parrot, a wireless electronics maker based in Paris, introduced a wi-fi helicopter with four fans and two cameras that stream video to the iPhone or iPod touch controlling it.
At the E3 game expo in Los Angeles this week, Parrot announced that the machine, which the company calls the AR.Drone quadricopter, will be available in the United States this September for a retail price of $299.
IDG News Service reports that the device’s four engines allow it to fly in any direction and that with the accompanying software, users can control the altitude and motion of the drone as well as engage in augmented reality games.

The Milestone XT720 featuring the first xenon flash on an android smartphone was announced by Motorola today.
The device features:
- an 8-megapixel camera that shoots 720p videos
- GPS navigation
- a 480x854 pixel resolution 3.7” capacitive touch screen
- FM radio
- xenon flash
A xenon flash is more powerful than the LED illumination commonly found in camera-phones, meaning the device can take pictures with less light and from farther away.

A flaw with some of Adobe’s software, potentially enabling hackers to remotely hijack a computer, was announced by the company Friday afternoon.
“The bug affects Flash Player 10.0.45.2, the most up-to-date version of the popular media player, as well as older editions on Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris,” writes Gregg Keizer for Computer World.
“Also vulnerable: PDF viewer Adobe Reader 9.x and PDF creation software Adobe Acrobat 9.x on Windows, Macintosh and Unix.”

Electronista reports that the people behind peer-to-peer file sharing application Kazaa have introduced Rdio, a “fully legal music service.”
Rdio offers users per track streaming, the ability to network based on the tracks one is enjoying, and information on the top songs on the network.
Web-only service will cost $5/month and customers will pay $10/month for access through their mobile platform.

“Inside this 8.9-inch tablet, you see, is Nvidia’s Tegra 2, the heart of which is a dual core ARM Cortex A9—a chip that’s a generation ahead of the silicon the iPad’s A4 is based on—meaning this thing will zooooom,” writes Matt Buchanan for Gizmodo.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the WiFi Alliance, a non-profit group that certifies wireless industry standards, has announced a project geared toward replacing most wire connections between electronics.
In a joint effort with the Wireless Gigabit Alliance, the group hopes to produce a new WiGig format, with wireless networking manufacturers like Linksys, that will transmit wireless data up to ten times faster than current formats.
With speeds of 7 gigabits per second, WiGig could transfer HD video, replacing HDMI wires and optical cables as well as connect gaming consoles to televisions among other applications.

This past weekend, Sony announced that because of technology and design philosophy changes, the company will stop selling 3.5” floppy disks in its home country of Japan by March, 2011.
Electronista reports that the internet, writable optical disks, and USB drives have effectively dated the 1.44MB floppy, as most non-text files now require much more space.
The floppy format, which has been around for over 40 years, has been unavailable in most markets since March 2010, but will still be available in emerging markets like India for some time.
