New MacBook Pros coming soon?

Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu believes current MacBook Pro supplies are tight after a check of the distribution channel.

Moreover, Intel just launched its next-generation Arrandale chips that are expected to be used for the next MacBook Pros. The new processors include a “turbo” mode that allows the chip to over-clock itself when the application running calls for an extra boost.

Wu expects the new MacBook Pro to debut during the March quarter, or early in the June quarter at the latest. He continues to rate Apple stock a Buy, with a price target of $253.

Apple plans dual graphics upgrade on MacBook Pro?

imageApple plans to improve the MacBook Pro‘s dual graphics chip in future models, AppleInsider reports.

The company reportedly has in its labs next-generation MacBook Pros that can switch between their integrated and discrete graphics processors automatically.

The current MacBook Pro line-up requires users to manually swap between an integrated Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics card and the more powerful 9600M GT discrete processor. First, the user must change settings in the notebook’s Energy Saver system preference pane by choosing the graphics card, then log out and log back in for the change to take effect.

The source could not confirm whether this new feature would arrive in time for the next MacBook Pro hardware refresh.

Apple announces MacBook repair extension program for hard drive issues.

Apple has determined that a very small percentage of hard drives that were used in MacBook systems, sold between approximately May 2006 and December 2007, may fail under certain conditions.

If your MacBook was purchased in the date range listed above and shows a flashing question mark on the screen, please take it to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider and they will examine the hard drive to confirm if it is eligible for a replacement, free of charge, under this program.

Note: If your MacBook is not experiencing the symptom listed above, you do not have to contact Apple or any Apple Authorized Service Provider. As always, Apple recommends that you back up your data.

Analytics firm detects 50 Apple tablets running iPhone OS 3.2.

image Mobile analytics firm Flurry has spotted about 50 devices believed to be Apple’s much rumored tablet device.

The tablets, which were being used to test iPhone applications, were tracked from Apple’s Cupertino, CA campus. These devices were first spotted in October 2009 but testing dramatically increased in January.

Flurry also found that the alleged tablets were running the unreleased iPhone OS 3.2, casting doubt into the claim that the tablet would be unveiled with iPhone OS 4.0.

Apple is hosting a media event on Wednesday during which the company is expected to introduce a tablet device.

image Macobserver posted photographs claimed to be of the glass that will be used for Apple’s widely anticipated tablet.

One of the pictures is taken on an Apple laptop keyboard for scaling purposes and the image suggests that the device will feature a 10-inch screen, as many analysts expect.

We received two new photos today, the first of which shows the glass sitting on top of a MacBook Pro’s keyboard. The trackpad is the rectangle below the glass at the bottom of the image, Macobserver writes.

Apple is hosting a media event on Wednesday, January 27th during which the company is expected to announce the long-rumored tablet computer.

Minor issues to delay Apple tablet launch?

image Apple’s tablet could be launched in June instead of the expected March launch date, according to Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu.

Wu believes that “minor issues” with battery life and durability could postpone the tablet’s release, although he still expects the device he describes as a “super iPod touch” to be formally introduced at the January 27 event.

The analyst claims that checks with supply chain sources indicate the launch pattern for the tablet could follow that of the first-generation iPhone in 2007. The first iPhone was introduced in January and launched six months later. He also expects the device to cost around $999, substantially more than Gene Munster’s estimate of $600.

In his note to clients, Wu wrote:

“This tablet product has been described to us as a hybrid between an iPhone/iPod touch and a mac but in terms of software and components, it appears closer to the former, meaning it is most likely ARM based. From our understanding, it is not intended to replace a Mac but be somewhat of a ‘super’ iPod touch where video, gaming, Web browsing, e-books and the ability to run multiple apps would be enhanced with the much larger screen.”

Apple tablet to carry PA Semi chip.

According to The Street, Apple’s widely anticipated tablet will not carry an Intel processor as many expected.

Instead, the tablet device will run on a processor developed by P.A. Semi, a chip manufacturer that Apple acquired two years ago, according to Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar.

This could turn out to be a significant blow for Intel if Apple’s tablet computer turns out to be a big hit.

Some have blamed the delay of the Apple tablet launch on the choice of the processor as the company wanted to design its own chip after buying P.A. Semi.

Apple is expected to introduce the device in late January during a special media event reportedly scheduled to take place on Wednesday, January 27th in San Francisco.
