Apple announces new iPod lineup.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs just announced a refreshed line of iPods at today’s media event in San Francisco, CA.

Jobs introduced the new iPod shuffle, nano, and touch models to the media in San Francisco and viewers around the world as the company provided a live broadcast for the first time to test its new $1 billion facility in North Carolina.

The new, thinner iPod touch includes a front facing camera for FaceTime, HD video recording, and retina display. The new model will be priced as follows:
8GB $229, 32GB $299, 64GB $399.

The new nano now boasts a small multi-touch screen and includes Nike+ and a pedometer.

The new shuffle will sell for only $49.

The new iPod family is available for pre-order today and will start shipping next week.

Increased adolescent deafness linked to iPod.

imageResearchers at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital analyzed data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys of 12 to 19-year-olds and found that one in five had evidence of hearing loss and 5 percent had some hearing loss.

Using data from 1988, researchers found a 30 percent increase in any degree of hearing loss and a 70 percent increase in mild to severe hearing loss in the past 15 years.

“Some risk factors, such as loud sound exposure from listening to music, may be of particular importance to adolescents,” say researchers.

Apple to replace overheating Japanese Nanos.

imageApple says it will replace whole iPod nanos that are overheating in Japan due to faulty batteries and not just the battery itself.

“The company this month responded to requests by Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency and the country’s trade ministry to explain additional safety measures,” reports Bloomberg.

“Six incidents involving the 2005 model Nano catching fire while being charged have been reported to the government since 2008, trade ministry spokesman Hiroshi Miyashita said last month.”

iPod touch with retina display and two cameras?

imageAs arn from MacRumors writes, “Most observers have assumed that the next-generation iPod touch will gain the same high-resolution Retina display found in the iPhone 4, but its camera features have been the subject of some debate.”

John Gruber from Daring Fireball reports, “if you wait a few weeks to buy the Touch, you’ll get one with a Retina Display and dual cameras.”

Sprint to offer WiFi hotspot iPod touch case?

imageAn FCC filing brought to light Wednesday reveals a device Sprint hopes will penetrate some of the Apple iPod touch market.

The Peel, a ZTE-made 3G-to-WiFi hotspot device that functions as an iPod touch case, would give the iPod and adjacent machines a constant 3G connection without the need for MiFi.

The Peel has a separate battery and would likely be charged with a mini-USB port, according to MacNN.

“Godfather of iPod” leaves Apple.

imageAfter nine years of working with Apple, its CEO Steve Jobs, and being integral in the creation of the iPod and iPhone, Tony Fadell is officially saying goodbye to the company.

Mr. Fadell plans to focus on green technology in the future, through private investment and consultation of companies.

“My primary focus will be helping the environment by working with consumer green-tech companies,” Fadell tells the New York Times. “I’m determined to tell my kids and grandkids amazing stories beyond my iPod and iPhone ones.”

Fifth beta of iPhone OS SDK 3.2 released.

imageApple today released iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 5 on the iPhone Dev Center.

Although revisions usually occur every two weeks, this release comes only eight days after the last update. Apple appears to be speeding up efforts to fine-tune the software before the iPad’s release.

The number of new apps for iPhone OS has spiked in recent months in anticipation of the upcoming iPad tablet device.

Pre-orders for the iPad started last Friday in the United States, with Wi-Fi models launching on April 3rd.

iPod owner sues Apple over sweat damage.

imageAn iPod Shuffle 3G owner from Manhattan Beach, California has filed a class action lawsuit against Apple alleging that though the Shuffle is advertised as exercise-compatiple, his device malfunctioned due to sweat.

Stephen Vale is seeking to prove that this represents false advertising on the part of Apple. He was told when trying to replace his device, “it was alright (sic) to exercise with the music player, but not to sweat,” according to the filing.

Vale has accused Apple of one count of false advertising, one count of unfair competition, and five counts of breach-of-warranty.

App Store data suggests strong iPod touch holiday sales.

image MobileCrunch reports that the App Store experienced very heavy traffic coming from iPod touch devices this holiday season according to mobile app analytics company Flurry.

On Christmas day, download volume for the iPod touch jumped nearly 1,000%, making iPod touch app downloads surpass iPhone app downloads for the first time.

App Store downloads from November to December increased by 51%. Google’s Android market had strong growth of 22% but is still some way from being a threat to Apple.

Flurry’s data suggests very strong iPod touch sales this holiday season.

Unreal 3D engine demonstrated on iPhone 3GS and iPod touch.

Game designers Epic Games have shown a demonstration of Unreal Engine 3 running on the iPhone 3GS and iPod touch.

The first-person shooter uses a modified level of the game Unreal Tournament and employs dual-touch controls.

The game has uses a virtual thumbstick on the bottom left part of the touch screen to control movement and a shooting button on the bottom right.

The game requires Open GL 2.0, which is only available on the iPhone 3GS and the latest iPod touch.

This news opens up the possibility of the appearance of Unreal-powered iPhone games.

64GB iPhone and 128GB iPod touch in 2010?

imageToshiba today announced the launch of a 64GB embedded NAND flash memory module which offers 64GB on a single chip.

The new chip will start mass production in the first quarter of 2010.

The iPhone currently has half the memory capacity of the high end iPod touch because the iPhone’s hardware space is taken up by communication components and can only fit one NAND flash chip.

We could therefore see 64GB iPhones and 128GB iPod touches in 2010. A recent teardown of the iPhone hardware revealed that Toshiba was the supplier of flash memory on the iPhone 3GS.

Apple releases iPod nano update.

imageApple released a firmware fix for the fifth generation iPod nano that was launched in September.

The iPod nano 1.0.2 update fixes audio playback to allow Normal, Slower, and Faster settings to work for audio podcasts and an issue where Genius Mixes did not work for Nike + iPod kit users.

The update is available via iTunes.
