iTV to be unveiled September 7th?

image“Though it is widely expected that Apple will hold a media-centric event in September, a new report claims sources within the company have confirmed the date: Sept. 7,” reports AppleInsider.

“Bloomberg added to its report on Apple’s alleged plans for a 99 cent TV show rental service, and cited an anonymous source in stating the Sept. 7 event date.

‘Episodes will be available to Apple’s rental service within 24 hours of their air dates and will be commercial-free, one of the people said,’ author Peter Burrows wrote. ‘Apple plans to hold a San Francisco Event Sept. 7, two weeks ahead of the start of the new prime-time TV season, to unveil the service and an updated line of entertainment products, two people said.’”

This will eventually destroy the television side of the cable and satellite industry, as your only requirement to access these on-demand stations will be an internet connection. Say goodbye to your monthly cable bill.

iTV with apps in the works?

imageReports indicate that the next Apple TV, re-termed the iTV, will abandon support for 1080p video output and standardize to 720p HDTV.

Engadget reports that iTV will use an A4 chip and be more contiguous with other iOS devices.

AppleInsider reports that “the company could erect a third new wing of apps in iTunes. The popularity of iPad (which has collected a portfolio of over 20,000 apps in just a few months) suggests tremendous potential for a TV-oriented iOS product.”

Rumor: Apple targeting video/TV market with new codec format, Apple TV 2.0.

imageHaving more or less dominated the market for portable music players, Apple could be shifting its focus to television and what has to this point been described by Apple as a hobby, Apple TV.

Hardmac reports:

“...Apple might be preparing its weapons to become a major player in the video and TV business.

This strategy would have several consequences.

First, a transition towards better codec, dropping the efficient but CPU-consuming encoding codec H.264 for adopting Wavelet transform-type of codec which will allow even better compression rate while offering better efficiency.”
