People magazine is officially the first publication to be offered free of charge on the iPad to people who hold a subscription to the magazine.
“Until now, the iPad versions of People, Time, Sports Illustrated and Fortune have cost the same as the newsstand price—$3.99 for each issue of People, $4.99 to $5.99 each for the rest—even if you were already paying to get the paper edition in the mail.
That changed with this week’s People iPad app, which is, for the first time, free to People subscribers. Fortune and the rest of Time Inc.’s (TWX) flagship magazines are expected to adopt the same pricing structure within the next 30 days, according to a source close to the project who spoke off the record,” reports CNN Money.

Researchers at Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital analyzed data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys of 12 to 19-year-olds and found that one in five had evidence of hearing loss and 5 percent had some hearing loss.
Using data from 1988, researchers found a 30 percent increase in any degree of hearing loss and a 70 percent increase in mild to severe hearing loss in the past 15 years.
“Some risk factors, such as loud sound exposure from listening to music, may be of particular importance to adolescents,” say researchers.

Phillip Shoemaker is the acting director of applications technology for Apple as well as the director of urination and fart app maker Gray Noodle.
According to a report by Wired, Shoemaker “has been frequently cited in news stories as one of the top decision makers enforcing rules when evaluating apps for approval or rejection.”
Gray Noodle’s portfolio of iPhone applications includes iWiz and Animal Farts, as well as Medical Poetry and Business Poetry.

London detectives arrested nine people suspected of orchestrating an elaborate cell phone fraud conspiracy in a series of early morning raids this week.
“The raids followed a month-long investigation into a rapidly growing criminal conspiracy profiting from the theft and illegal use of almost 1,000 iPhones," reports Telegraph.
“Police were called in after mobile phone company 02 watched the scam spiral out of control, with £1.2 million stolen through premium phone lines in July alone.”

Foxconn Technology Group is a subsidiary of the world’s largest electronic component maker as well as a main supplier of components for the Apple iPhone and iPod.
This past June, the company increased worker’s cash compensation by 30 percent in the hopes of earning the respect of workers and the general public following a string of employee suicides, in addition to hiring counselors and installing safety nets on buildings.
This week, Foxconn is holding rallies in hopes of raising worker morale in the company’s factories in south China.

Paul Devine, a mid-level global supply manager for Apple. Inc., has pleaded not guilty to charges that he accepted over $1 million in kickbacks from Apple’s Asian suppliers in return for confidential company information.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Kane opposed granting Mr. Devine bail at the hearing in San Jose federal court Monday, where Devine and his lawyer entered his plea.
Devive faces a federal indictment which includes 23 counts of money laundering, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud as well as a civil suit filed by Apple accusing him of racketeering and breach of contract.

Rumors of a second-generation, lighter, 7” iPad gained some credibility this week from a report by a large Taiwanese newspaper.
“The Economic Daily reports that Taiwanese companies have won a number of component contracts for the iPad 2,” reports PCWorld.
“Chimei Innolux will supply 7-inch LCD screens, which use the same IPS (in-plane switching) technology found in the original iPad, which improves viewing angles and color on LCD screens. Touchscreen technology for the screens will come from Cando Corporation, the report says.”

Apple’s exclusive iPhone distributor in China has reached an agreement with the Cupertino, CA-based tech giant to sell the magical and revolutionary iPad in the planet’s most populous nation.
Wan Shanshan and Han Wei report that “a source from China Unicom said that the company has finalized an agreement to be the sole distributor of Apple’s iPad in China.”
The iPad using a 3G micro sim card and the iPhone 4 should both be introduced to the Chinese market in September.

“A midlevel Apple manager was arrested Friday and accused of accepting more than $1 million in kickbacks from half a dozen Asian suppliers of iPhone and iPod accessories in a federal indictment unsealed and a separate civil suit,” reports Mercury News.
“Paul Shin Devine, a global supply manager, and Andrew Ang, of Singapore, were named in a 23-count federal grand jury indictment for wire fraud, money laundering and kickbacks.”
