A Softbank Mobile official believes that the arrival of Apple’s iPhone 3G will force Japanese cellphone makers to revamp their handsets to allow increasingly sophisticated software.
“Faced with increased competition, Japanese handset providers will have to provide more software-oriented machines like the touch-screen iPhone, said Tetsuzo Matsumoto, a senior executive vice president at Softbank Mobile,” AFP reports.
“It’s now the turning point,” said Matsumoto, whose company is the only Japanese carrier so far to have launched the iPhone 3G in Japan.
Other operators, such as NTT DoCoMo, are skeptical.

A number of iPhone 3G users are experiencing inconsistent cellular connections with the new device, according to some reports.
There is a popular discussion thread on Apple’s forums focusing on the problem. Some users are reporting frequent dropped calls on 3G networks. A 3G iPhone user named posted on the forum: “in Washington, D.C., all calls were dropped after a second or two.” But when 3G was turned off, the user said, there were “no problems.”
The connectivity problem appears to be only for iPhone on the AT&T network, Newsfactor reports. It is important to note, however, that online reports from users cannot precisely illustrate the real extent of the issue.

A Wall Street Journal interview with Steve Jobs reveals that users have downloaded more than 60 million programs for the iPhone from the App Store during its first month in operation.
While most of the applications were free, the company sold an average of $1 million a day in applications for a total of about $30 million in sales over the month. “I’ve never seen anything like this in my career for software,” Jobs said.
He said that Apple stands to collect $360 million a year in new revenue from the App Store if sales stay at the current pace. “This thing’s going to crest a half a billion, soon,” he added. “Who knows, maybe it will be a $1 billion marketplace at some point in time.”
